Cable in the Car

Over the holidays, I invested in a Sirrius Sportster for my wife’s car. My wife not being a big sportsfan, I convinced her that the Sportster’s functionality as a mobile sat receiver was useful. Great sound, many channels, low monthly fee, commercial free-take anywhere music. I liked it. She loves it. It made for a great holiday gift.

My brother in law called in “Cable in the car”. Not far off. Except I think the medium might change. Consider one technology, the WiFiMax/ETSI HyperMAN wireless standard. 75mbps throughput on a 30-mile carrier; imagine total wireless anywhere – hotspots = moot, everything = connected, cell phones and land-lines = displaced by mobile VOIP solutions; more drastic competition into LD, LEC, and cellular/PCS services means connectivity on the cheap for consumers; imagine radio, TV, movies – anything can be piped anywhere.

Think of it: universal and near costless connectivity available everywhere in a metropolitan area near you!

Cable in the car, absolutely; cable in the air, most likely. In light of WiFiMax, Sirius and XM may be a leap-frog stage in subscriber radio. Woops, maybe we should have let Howard Stern in on the secret? It was because of WiFiMax alone that I didn’t invest in the $500-for-life subscription. Who knows – Sirius may just become the betamax of our digital radio future…
