Actiontec m1000 and ICMP Port Filtering

Had an interesting situation today. A client of mine, an xDSL customer, could route to certain sites on the Internet but not all of them. I found the problem had to do with an ICMP filter on the firewall’s default setting. Through releasing the ICMP block inbound, the routing worked successfully and improved the speed of her xDSL connection. I figured this might help you, too!

  1. The Actiontec m1000′s web console can be accessed by opening Internet Explorer and typing in its IP address; usually 192.168.0.1.
  2. Under Advanced Settings, access the Firewall Settings.
  3. The settings may not be set to Custom. Set it to Custom.
  4. In the list, make sure ICMP is set to inbound and outbound.
  5. Confirm the change with an Apply button, found at the bottom of the interface.
The Actiontec will restart. You should now be able to browse wherever you’d like on the ‘Net.
Just an interesting tid-bit!
